Population Geography: The branch of human geography that studies the spatial distribution, composition, growth, and movement of human populations, and how these dynamics relate to the physical environment, economic activity, and social structure.
Census: A complete enumeration of all individuals in a defined territory at a specific point in time, conducted by government authority. India's census collects data on population size, age-sex structure, literacy, occupation, migration status, religion, language, caste, and housing conditions, making it the single most comprehensive demographic dataset for the country.
Demographic Transition: A model describing how a country moves from high birth rates and high death rates (low growth, pre-industrial) through an intermediate phase of high birth rates and falling death rates (rapid growth) to low birth rates and low death rates (slow growth, post-industrial). India is currently in the third stage for most of its territory, though some northern and tribal areas remain in the second.

The first is the statutory criterion — any place notified as a municipality, corporation, cantonment board, or notified area committee. The second is the census criterion (Census Town) — a settlement with (i) a minimum population of 5,000, (ii) at least 75 percent of the male working population engaged in non-agricultural activities, and (iii) a population density of at least 400 persons per square kilometre.
Decennial Census: A census conducted every ten years. India has maintained a decennial census cycle with unbroken regularity since 1881, making it one of the world's longest continuous census traditions.
Population Indices and Their Computation
Population density is total population divided by total area (persons per sq km). Growth rate can be expressed as arithmetic growth (absolute number added per decade) or geometric/exponential growth (percentage rate). The Scale of India's Population
India's population crossed one billion before the turn of the millennium and stood at approximately 1.21 billion at the time of Census 2011. By 2023, India surpassed China to become the world's most populous country. This scale is not uniform — it is concentrated in specific regions, creating a geography of density that has profound implications for resource allocation, governance, and development planning.
Population density at the national level was approximately 382 persons per square kilometre in 2011. But this national figure masks enormous variation. The Gangetic Plains — Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal, Delhi — record densities of 800–1,100 persons per sq km, some of the highest rural densities in the world. By contrast, the Himalayan districts of Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Arunachal Pradesh record fewer than 20 persons per sq km.
Chhattisgarh's population density in 2011 was approximately 189 persons per sq km — well below the national average. Chhattisgarh's urbanisation rate in 2011 was approximately 23.2 percent — below the national average of 31.2 percent, reflecting its predominantly rural and tribal character. However, growth poles like Raipur (now the state capital), Bhilai (steel city), Korba (power hub), and Bilaspur (railway and commercial centre) are driving rapid urbanisation in specific corridors.
Urbanisation Policy: From JNNURM to Smart Cities

Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM), launched in 2005, was India's first large-scale urban infrastructure investment programme. Scheduled Tribes: Distribution, Demography, and Chhattisgarh's Profile
National Distribution
Madhya Pradesh has the largest absolute number of Scheduled Tribe population in India according to Census 2011 — a fact tested in CGPSC 2018. This is one of the most commonly confused data points because students conflate absolute numbers with percentage shares. Mizoram has one of the highest ST percentages (~94% of its population), but absolute numbers in Mizoram are very small because the state's total population is only about 1.1 million. Madhya Pradesh, with a population of over 72 million and approximately 21 percent ST share, has the largest absolute tribal count — around 15.3 million ST persons.

The Halam and Notiya Tribes Question
CGPSC 2018 tested a specific knowledge point about the Halam and Notiya tribes — both are primarily found in Tripura. This is a comparative awareness question, and it illustrates an important examination strategy: CGPSC occasionally tests tribal geography of other states to see if candidates have read standard reference material. The Halam are a group of tribal communities in Tripura including sub-groups such as Bongcher, Chorei, Korbong, Molsom, Ranglong, and Rupini. The Notiya are also a Tripura tribe. Neither community has a significant presence in Maharashtra, Kerala, or Chhattisgarh.
Chhattisgarh's Tribal Landscape
Chhattisgarh was carved out of Madhya Pradesh in November 2000 specifically because its southern and central districts were predominantly tribal and had historically felt marginalised by the Madhya Pradesh administration. The state's 42 notified Scheduled Tribes can be grouped broadly:
Forest-dwelling tribes of Bastar and South Chhattisgarh: Gond (the largest group), Baiga, Abujhmaria, Muria, Dorla, Bhattra, Halba, Bhatra, Madia. These communities live in the districts of Bastar, Narayanpur, Bijapur, Sukma, Dantewada, and Kanker.
Tribes of central Chhattisgarh: Kamar, Pando, Korwa, Bhunjia — smaller communities found in Kabirdham, Baloda Bazar, and Gariaband districts.
Tribes of north Chhattisgarh (Sarguja division): Oraon (Kurukh), Munda, Kanwar, Agaria, Korba — these communities migrated from Jharkhand over generations and maintain strong connections to the Jharkhand tribal belt.

Typology of Migration

Chhattisgarh's Migration Reality

The single most common error in population geography questions is conflating rankings based on absolute numbers with rankings based on percentage share.
