Agriculture is the backbone of India's economy and the single most important livelihood activity across the country's rural landscape. For aspirants preparing for the CGPSC State Service Examination, this subtopic occupies a pivotal place within the Geography paper. Understanding agriculture is not merely about memorising crop names — it demands a command of agro-climatic zones, soil-crop relationships, irrigation infrastructure, cropping calendars, land-use statistics, and the transforming policy environment that governs Indian farming.
The CGPSC has tested this subtopic consistently across every year from 2018 through 2023, yielding nine confirmed previous-year questions. That frequency alone signals the examiners' sustained interest. The questions span a wide difficulty range: some probe basic factual recall (which state leads in soyabean production, where jute is grown), while others demand careful reasoning about agro-climatic classification systems or census data on landholding structure. Two questions required students to evaluate whether a set of statements were simultaneously true or false — a format that rewards deep, precise knowledge over surface-level familiarity.
The subtopic's syllabus anchor sits within the broader Geography paper of CGPSC Paper 1 (General Studies). Chhattisgarh's agricultural identity is inseparable from rice. The state is often called the "Rice Bowl of Central India," a designation that reflects both its ecology — deep black cotton soils and red laterite soils receiving heavy kharif rainfall — and its cultural history, with numerous tribal communities whose food systems, festivals, and livelihoods are organised around paddy cultivation. Yet Chhattisgarh's agriculture goes well beyond rice: the state grows maize, pulses, oilseeds, and minor millets, and its tribal heartland in Bastar and Surguja districts harbours traditional agroforestry, shifting cultivation (locally called bewar or dahiya), and forest-based livelihood systems that appear directly in CGPSC questions on jhum cultivation.
The national picture is equally important for this examination. India's agricultural geography is characterised by extraordinary diversity — from the wheat-dominant Indo-Gangetic plains to the rice-jute belt of the eastern coast, the cotton-soyabean triangle of central India, and the plantation crops of the south. Cropping Seasons of India
India's agricultural calendar is divided into three principal seasons, each governed by the monsoon cycle.
Kharif season: The summer monsoon crop season, sown at the onset of the southwest monsoon (June–July) and harvested in September–October. Kharif crops require warm, wet conditions and include rice, maize, jowar, bajra, cotton, jute, groundnut, soyabean, tur (arhar), and urad. They dominate in areas with reliable monsoon rainfall, including Chhattisgarh, the eastern states, and peninsular India.
Rabi season: The winter crop season, sown after the monsoon retreats (October–November) and harvested in March–April. Rabi crops grow in cool, dry conditions with relatively low water requirements, using residual soil moisture or irrigation. Principal rabi crops are wheat, barley, gram (chickpea), mustard, linseed, and peas. The Indo-Gangetic plain dominates rabi production.
Zaid season: A short summer season between rabi and kharif (March–June). Zaid crops include watermelon, muskmelon, cucumber, moong, and some vegetables. They are grown primarily in irrigated areas and river floodplains.
Jhum cultivation (Shifting cultivation): A traditional slash-and-burn agricultural practice in which forest patches are cleared, crops are grown for one to three years, and the plot is then abandoned to allow forest regeneration. In India it is concentrated in the North-Eastern states — Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, and Arunachal Pradesh. Locally called jhum in the north-east, it is known as bewar or dahiya in Chhattisgarh's tribal areas and podu in Andhra Pradesh. CGPSC 2023 directly tested this geographic association.
Agro-climatic region: A macro-level planning zone defined by homogeneity of climate (temperature, rainfall), physiography, and soils. The Planning Commission of India delineated 15 agro-climatic regions for India for purposes of regional agricultural planning. These 15 regions are distinct from the agro-ecological zones used by the ICAR/FAO framework.
Agro-ecological region: A finer classification combining climate, soil, and growing period data. The National Bureau of Soil Survey and Land Use Planning (NBSS&LUP) under ICAR has classified India into 20 agro-ecological regions based on landform, soil type, bio-climate, and length of growing period. This number — 20 agro-ecological regions, not 15 — was directly tested in CGPSC 2020.
Agroforestry: The practice of integrating trees and shrubs with crops or livestock on the same land unit, producing synergistic ecological and economic benefits. The National Research Centre for Agroforestry (NRCAF) is located at Jhansi, Uttar Pradesh — a fact tested in CGPSC 2019.
Landholding size classification: The Agriculture Census of India classifies farmers by the size of their operational holding. Marginal holdings are below 1 hectare, small holdings are 1–2 ha, semi-medium 2–4 ha, medium 4–10 ha, and large above 10 ha. The combined share of marginal and small (collectively "small and marginal") farmers has been a recurring census statistic tested in competitive exams.
Milk production (animal husbandry): A component of the broad agricultural economy, covering dairy production from buffaloes, cows, and goats. State-level rankings in milk production change with economic surveys and are periodically asked in CGPSC. As per Economic Survey 2020-21, the ranking in decreasing order was Gujarat > Madhya Pradesh > Punjab > Haryana — directly tested in CGPSC 2021.
Soils and Their Crop Affinity
Soil type is the primary determinant of which crops a region can grow profitably without heavy amendments.

In Chhattisgarh, the dominant soils are red and yellow soils (locally called matasi and dorsa) covering the Chhattisgarh plains, and deep black soils in parts of Durg, Raipur, and Bilaspur districts. The red soils support rice cultivation as the principal kharif crop, while black soils in the plains enable jowar and pulses in rabi.
The Monsoon-Agriculture Nexus
India receives about 75–80 per cent of its annual rainfall during the southwest monsoon (June–September). Agricultural output is therefore tightly coupled with monsoon performance. El Niño years typically bring deficient rainfall across large parts of the country, triggering drought and crop failure. The coefficient of variation in monsoon rainfall is highest in Rajasthan, Gujarat, and parts of peninsular India, making those regions particularly vulnerable. Chhattisgarh generally receives 1,200–1,400 mm annually, making it well-suited for rice but also at risk when monsoon timing is erratic — early withdrawal or delayed onset disrupts the kharif paddy transplanting window.
The southwest monsoon enters the Indian subcontinent from two branches: the Bay of Bengal branch, which moves northward along the eastern coast and up the Gangetic plain, and the Arabian Sea branch, which drives rainfall over the Western Ghats and then penetrates inland. The Bay of Bengal branch delivers the early rain that triggers paddy transplanting in the eastern states and Chhattisgarh; the Arabian Sea branch is crucial for the Deccan, Gujarat, and parts of central India. When either branch weakens or delays, regional agricultural cycles are disrupted. States like Chhattisgarh that lie in the path of the Bay of Bengal branch receive their rainfall in concentrated pulses during July–August, making them vulnerable to both early withdrawal and mid-season breaks.
Green Revolution: The technology-driven transformation of Indian agriculture in the 1960s–70s based on high-yielding varieties (HYV) of wheat and rice, fertilisers, pesticides, and assured irrigation. It was concentrated in Punjab, Haryana, and western Uttar Pradesh, and is credited with ending India's chronic food deficits. However, it also deepened regional inequality (benefitting irrigated areas more than rainfed zones), caused groundwater depletion, and monoculturised farming systems. Chhattisgarh's tribal agriculture was largely untouched by the Green Revolution, which partly explains the persistence of traditional crop diversity there.
Minimum Support Price (MSP): The price at which the central government guarantees purchase of certain crops to protect farmers from market price collapse. MSP is announced before each sowing season and covers 23 crops. Chhattisgarh is one of India's largest MSP paddy procurement states — the state government's Food Department and NAAN (Naan Nehru) procurement networks ensure that a large share of the kharif paddy harvest enters the public distribution system rather than being sold at distress prices in mandis.
Net sown area: The area on which crops are actually grown in a year, excluding fallows. India's net sown area is approximately 140 million hectares, the largest in the world. Chhattisgarh's net sown area is approximately 5.8 million hectares, of which roughly 70 per cent is under kharif crops (predominantly rice).
Gross cropped area: The total of all areas sown, counting each crop separately even if grown on the same land in the same year. When gross cropped area exceeds net sown area, it indicates multiple cropping.
Land-Use Classification
India's land-use statistics are collected annually by the Ministry of Agriculture through state revenue departments. The standard classification divides the total geographical area into:
- Forest area — land under actual forest cover
- Area not available for cultivation — built-up land, fallow land, barren land
- Other uncultivated land excluding fallows — permanent pastures, miscellaneous trees, cultivable wastes
- Fallow lands — land that was cultivated but is currently left uncultivated (current fallow = left one season; other fallow = left 1–5 years)
- Net sown area — actually cultivated land
The sum of fallow lands and net sown area gives the total cultivable land. In Chhattisgarh, a substantial portion of the land is under forest (the state's forest cover is among the highest in India at approximately 44 per cent of geographic area), which limits the net sown area relative to states like Punjab or Haryana where forests are negligible.
