Climate and Seasons

Climate: The long-term average pattern of weather — temperature, precipitation, humidity, and winds — over a region, typically defined over a 30-year baseline period. Chhattisgarh's climate is classified as humid subtropical to tropical savanna, exhibiting pronounced seasonality driven by the South-West Monsoon.

Monsoon: Derived from the Arabic word mausim (season), the monsoon is a seasonal reversal of wind direction over a large geographical area. Over the Indian subcontinent, the summer (South-West) Monsoon brings rain from June to September; the winter (North-East) Monsoon contributes mainly to the south-eastern coast.

Tropical Cyclone: An intense low-pressure weather system with organised convection and surface winds of at least 63 km/h circulating around the centre. In the context of Chhattisgarh, Bay of Bengal tropical cyclones in May occasionally produce pre-monsoon rainfall that the exam has specifically tested.

Western Disturbance: An extratropical cyclone originating over the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic/Caspian regions, which travels eastward across Central Asia and brings winter and early spring precipitation to the northern Indian subcontinent (Punjab, Himachal, Uttarakhand). Western disturbances do not significantly affect Chhattisgarh — an important distinction.

Loo: A hot, dry, dust-laden wind that blows during summer afternoons across the Indo-Gangetic Plain and parts of central India, including Chhattisgarh. Temperatures can spike to 45–48°C locally. The name derives from the Hindi/Urdu word for a scorching blast.

Agro-Climatic Zone: A geographically defined area with broadly homogeneous climate (temperature, rainfall, length of growing season) and soil characteristics, which determines the cropping systems appropriate for that area. Chhattisgarh is divided into three major agro-climatic zones: the Chhattisgarh Plain (central zone), the Northern Hilly Region (Sarguja–Koriya belt), and the Bastar Plateau (southern zone).

Soils of Chhattisgarh

Kanhar: Locally named heavy black cotton soil (vertisol) found in low-lying areas of the Chhattisgarh Plain, especially in river flood plains. High clay content (montmorillonite), deep, highly fertile, moisture-retentive, and crack-prone in dry season. Excellent for paddy and wheat.

Matasi: A medium-textured sandy loam soil found at altitudes intermediate between Bhata and Kanhar — typically on gentle slopes and undulating terrain. It contains moderate amounts of sand, low iron, and is less fertile than Kanhar. A critical factual distinction: Matasi soil has low iron content (not high), which has been directly tested.

Dorsa: A sandy soil intermediate between Matasi and Bhat, typically found on slightly elevated upland terrains. Moderately fertile.

Kachbar: A mixed soil formed by a combination of black Kanhar soil and red/yellow soil. Found in transitional zones where alluvial deposits mix with lateritic material.

Mata (not Matasi): The correct local name for yellow clay soil is sometimes confused; CGPSC has tested that "Mata" is NOT the correct local name for yellow clay soil — the correct name is different, a distinction the exam exploited in 2020.

Bhata (Bhat): Infertile laterite soil found on high plateaus and ridges. Characterised by low pH (acidic), high iron-oxide and aluminium content, reddish colour, and very low agricultural productivity. CGPSC 2024 confirmed that Bhata soil has the lowest pH among the standard soil types.

Red and Yellow Soil: Formed by weathering of crystalline and metamorphic rocks — specifically granite and schist (granite-schist complex). CGPSC 2020 tested this directly. The red colour comes from ferric oxides; yellow colouration appears where hydration is more complete.

Forest Types — Overview

Tropical Moist Deciduous Forest: The dominant forest type of Chhattisgarh's better-watered areas (750–1600 mm rainfall). Characterised by sal (Shorea robusta) as the climax species, along with teak, bamboo, and mixed hardwoods. Trees shed leaves for a brief period in the dry season.

Tropical Dry Deciduous Forest: Found in areas with 500–750 mm rainfall or in rain-shadow zones. Less dense, dominated by teak, tendu, mahua, and palash. Species are more xerophytic.

Tropical Semi-Evergreen and Evergreen Forest: Restricted to moist pockets in Bastar, Surguja, and along hill slopes receiving 1600 mm+ rainfall. Multi-layered canopy; species include wild mango, Indian laurel, Indian rosewood.

Northern Tropical Dry Deciduous Forest: Occupies drier northern and north-western margins (Bilaspur, Koriya, northern Surguja).

Non-Timber Forest Produce (NTFP): Forest products other than timber, including seeds, fruits, leaves, bark, resins, and gums. In Chhattisgarh, NTFPs — especially tendu patta (bidi leaf), mahua flowers and seeds, sal seeds (for butter), char/chironji nuts, bamboo shoots, and medicinal herbs — constitute the primary forest-based income for Scheduled Tribe communities. The Chhattisgarh government has nationalised tendu leaf collection, which provides seasonal employment to over two million collectors.

Biosphere Reserve: An internationally recognised designation under UNESCO's Man and Biosphere (MAB) Programme for areas preserving biodiversity while allowing sustainable human use. The Achanakmar–Amarkantak Biosphere Reserve spanning Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh is among India's biosphere reserves with UNESCO recognition. Biosphere reserves have a core zone (strictly protected), a buffer zone (limited use), and a transition zone (human activities permitted).

Forest Fire: A critical threat to Chhattisgarh's forests, particularly during the February–May dry season. Ground fires are common in the dry deciduous belt; the forest department runs fire-watch from February to May. Bamboo brakes are especially fire-prone due to their combustibility when dry. Forest fires are worsened by the Loo wind conditions in April–May.
