However, the actual questions asked in the last five years (2019–2023) reveal a sharp focus on forest ecology, biodiversity hotspots, forest types, and Madhya Pradesh-specific forest data. Of the eight available Previous Year Questions (PYQs), seven are directly about forests — their types, distribution, percentage cover, management institutions, and matching exercises. Only one question (Q7 on biodiversity hotspots) touches a broader ecological concept. Forest Types of India and Madhya Pradesh — A Detailed Classification

Littoral or Tidal Forests — A Special Case

Teak in Madhya Pradesh — The 25% Fact

Forest Cover and Deforestation in Madhya Pradesh — District-wise Data

State-level Statistics

Madhya Pradesh has the largest forest cover among all Indian states. As per ISFR 2021, the total forest cover of MP is 77,482 sq km, which is 25.14% of the state’s geographical area. The recorded forest area (legal) is higher at 94,689 sq km (30.7% of geographical area). The difference is due to encroachments, shifting cultivation, and other factors.

District with Maximum Forest Area Percentage

The student should also prepare for combinatorial questions that mash up two concepts, e.g., “Which of the following pairs of forest type and district is correct?” or “Arrange the following MP districts in decreasing order of forest cover.”


Common Mistakes & Traps

  • Confusing forest types: Many students think Sundarbans are “tropical dry deciduous” because they are in a delta with dry seasons. In reality, they are littoral/tidal. Similarly, students may think alpine forests exist in MP because of the Satpura hills — but the altitude is too low. Always remember: alpine requires >3,000 m.
  • Misidentifying biodiversity hotspots: The Sundarbans are often mistakenly associated with the Sundaland hotspot due to the similar name. Sundaland is for the Nicobar Islands and Southeast Asia; Sundarbans are in the Indo-Burma hotspot. Also, Naro Hills is a common trap — it is ecologically rich but not a global hotspot.
  • Wrong percentage for teak: Students may guess 20% or 30% because they remember “about a quarter”. The exact figure is 25%. Do not round to 20 or 30.
  • IIFM location confusion: Many think IIFM is in Dehradun because the Forest Research Institute is there. Remember: IIFM = Bhopal; FRI = Dehradun; TFRI = Jabalpur.
  • Sheopur vs other districts: Students may think Alirajpur or Dindori have the highest forest cover because they are known for dense forests. But Sheopur has the highest percentage (70.2%), though its absolute area is smaller. Always check the question wording: “as a percentage of geographical area”.
  • Matching questions — careless elimination: In matching, students often match the first pair correctly but then make a mistake in the second pair, leading to a wrong sequence. Always verify all pairs before selecting the code. Use the process of elimination: if one pair is definitely wrong, eliminate that option.
  • Assuming all forest types are present in MP: The question “Which type of forests are not found in MP?” often includes “Tropical wet deciduous” as a distractor. MP does have tropical moist deciduous (which is essentially wet deciduous). So “Tropical wet deciduous” is found in MP. The only major type absent is alpine. Also, littoral/tidal is absent.
  • Ignoring the word “global” in hotspot questions: The question specifically says “globally accepted National ‘hot spot’”. Some students may think any biodiversity-rich area qualifies. Only the four official hotspots count.

Mnemonic 1: “HIS W” for India’s Four Biodiversity Hotspots

  • H – Himalayas
  • I – Indo-Burma
  • S – Sundaland
  • W – Western Ghats

What it unlocks: The names of the four globally accepted hotspots in India. Use it to quickly recall the list and to identify non-hotspots like Naro Hills.

Worked example: In the PYQ (Q7), the options were Himalayas, Naro Hills, Sundaland, Western Ghats. Using “HIS W”, you know that Himalayas, Sundaland, and Western Ghats are on the list, so Naro Hills is the odd one out.

Mnemonic 2: “Teak 25, Sheopur 70” — A Rhyme for MP Forest Facts

  • Teak 25 — Teak covers about 25% of MP’s forest area.
  • Sheopur 70 — Sheopur district has about 70% forest cover (the highest).

What it unlocks: Two critical numerical facts that have been tested (Q1 and Q5). The rhyme helps recall the numbers.

Worked example: When asked “What percentage of MP’s forest area is teak?” you recall “Teak 25” and answer “About 25%”. When asked “Which district has the highest forest cover percentage?” you recall “Sheopur 70” and answer “Sheopur”.
