Award: A formal recognition given to an individual, group, or organization for excellence in a particular field. Awards can be in the form of medals, trophies, certificates, or cash. Example: the Nobel Prize is an award; the Blue Flag certification is also an award but for beaches.
Prize: A specific type of award often associated with a competition or a selection process. Prizes usually involve a monetary component and a certificate/medal. Example: International Booker Prize for translated fiction.
Medal: A small, flat piece of metal awarded for achievement, usually in sports (gold, silver, bronze) or military gallantry. India’s medal tally at the 18th Asian Games 2018 is a classic BPSC topic.
Tournament: A series of competitive matches or events culminating in a champion. In sports, Asia Cup (cricket) and French Open (tennis) are tournaments.
Championship: The event itself or the title won. “He won the All England Open Badminton Championships” — the championship refers to both the event and the title.
UNESCO World Heritage Site: A place (building, city, forest, etc.) listed by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization as having outstanding universal value. Qutb Minar and Red Fort are India’s UNESCO World Heritage Sites; India Gate is not (tested in BPSC 2023).
UNESCO City of Literature: A designation under the UNESCO Creative Cities Network. Kozhikode became India’s first such city in June 2024 (tested in BPSC 2024).
Blue Flag Certification: An international eco-label awarded to beaches that meet strict standards of water quality, environmental education, safety, and sustainability. In 2020, eight Indian beaches were recommended for this certification (BPSC 2020).
Festival (Cultural Event): A recurring celebration with religious, cultural, or seasonal significance. The Thadingyut Festival is a three-day Buddhist festival celebrated in Myanmar (BPSC 2023), not in Chile, Nepal, or Germany.
Deaflympics (formerly Deaf Olympics): International multi-sport event for deaf athletes. Hrithik Anand from Bihar won a gold medal at the 24th Summer Deaf Olympics in Brazil (BPSC 2021).
Ramon Magsaysay Award: Often called Asia’s Nobel Prize, given to individuals or organizations in Asia for selfless service. The 2024 recipients included more than one of the listed options — Karma Phuntsho (Bhutan), Rural Doctors Movement (Thailand), and Miyazaki Hayao (Japan) were all awarded (BPSC 2025).
Goldman Environmental Prize: Annual prize for grassroots environmental activists, one per region. Alok Shukla from India won the Asia region award in 2024 (BPSC 2024).
Krishi Karman Award: Government of India award for states excelling in food grain production. Bihar received it in 2020 for production and productivity of maize and wheat (BPSC 2020).
Dadasaheb Phalke Indian Television Award: A national honour for Indian television. Deep Shrestha from Bihar received this award in 2022 (BPSC 2022).
