UPPSC Mains: How many optional papers and which combinations work best?

I am confused about the optional paper structure in UPPSC PCS Mains. How many optional papers are there and which subject combinations are most popular among toppers? I have a background in Political Science — should I take it as optional?

UPPSC Mains now has the optional reduced to essentially GS-heavy structure with one optional subject (two papers). Popular scoring optionals: Geography, History, Public Administration, and Hindi Literature. With a Political Science background, take it — it overlaps heavily with GS Paper 2 and the essay.
